CITIZEN REDISTRICTING COMMITTEE IS THE PATH FOR YOUR INPUT
Every Meeting is for EVERY New Mexican!
SANTA FE, N.M. – Traditionally the state legislature draws new district maps for elections every ten
years, but this time the ideas and perspective of New Mexico’s citizens will help guide the redistricting
process.
In keeping with the state Redistricting Act of 2021, the Citizen Redistricting Committee was created to
actively seek public input and prepare recommended maps for consideration by the legislature.
“The Citizen Redistricting Committee’s entire purpose is to propose election maps to the legislature that
reflect the concerns of New Mexico’s citizens and communities,” said CRC chairperson Justice Ed Chavez. “to do that, we need to hear from as many citizens as possible.”
Nearly 1,200 people attended an initial round of public meetings either in person or remotely by video and more than one hundred people testified live or in writing about their communities and district changes they want to see happen.
Maps that will be proposed to the legislature are being drawn now and the committee is hosting a second round of meetings throughout the state to seek even more input from citizens of New Mexico.
There are three ways every New Mexican can participate in the redistricting process:
1. Attend a public meeting in person
2. Attend a public meeting remotely through Zoom
3. Provide written comments through the CRC website
The committee is hosting as many meetings as possible across the state, but participation isn’t restricted to geography – every meeting is open to every New Mexican and the Citizen Redistricting Committee wants to see you there!
A schedule of public meetings, Zoom log-in information, opportunities to submit written comment, and even tutorials to help individuals create and submit their own district mapping examples are available on the CRC website at www.nmredistricting.org.
